Crewel Embroidery Workshop in Chicago

For crewel embroidery lovers, Katherine Shaughnessy will be giving a workshop at One Strange Bird in Chicago on Saturday, April 14.  Katherine will be teaching this two hour crewel embroidery workshop and she will have a trunk load of crewelwork samples, including new projects from her upcoming book, New Crewel: The Motif Collection coming out in May.  The workshop will provide a brief introduction of the crewel basics, a demonstration of eight different crewel stitches and finishing techniques.  Participants will receive all the supplies needed to get started ---linen fabric, wool thread, needles and a hoop. The class is $65 and runs from 10:30am-12:30pm.  All skill levels welcome.  Sign up online at www.onestrangebird.com.

The Wool & Hoop kits use Appleton Crewel Wool. It is thicker than embroidery floss and we use only one strand at a time. On the other hand, the Thomas Joseph cross stitch kits use DMC embroidery floss and that thread is much thinner and smoother. Those kits instruct us to use two threads at a time. I hope this helps!

What a lovely idea to teach these secithts. I’ve just become interested in hand embroidery and want to use it on crazy quilt patches (another new interest). My question is: what kind of thread are you using in the tutorial? The only thread I’m familiar with for hand embroidery is the skeins with 6 strands. This thread looks a lot thicker and silkier. Thanks
